TAKASHI HOMMA, Aero-Photo, Gallery Interform / Amus Arts Press, 2000

A compact aerial survey of Tokyo and Berlin photographed from above and published as the third title in Gallery Interform's Postcard Gallery series. Apartment blocks, railways, roads, parks and unfinished edges of the city are flattened into pattern and infrastructure.

The timing is particularly good. Aero-Photo followed soon after Homma's Tokyo Suburbia, the project that established his detached view of Tokyo's peripheral landscapes. Here the camera changes altitude. The suburb is no longer encountered from inside it; it is looked down upon as a system.

But the format complicates that distance. The book consists of 28 postcards, turning Homma's aerial photographs into images designed to be removed, written on, posted and dispersed. The city is first converted into photograph, then into a portable unit of circulation.

The city becomes image. The image becomes postcard. The book is designed to come apart.

That tension between detached observation and physical distribution makes Aero-Photo more than a small photobook. A view produced from extreme distance ends up as something intended to travel hand to hand.
