First volume in Air Mexico, the literary series initiated by Mousse and commissioned by kurimanzutto to reconsider the relationship between exhibitions and writing.

Describe This Distance takes Sarah Lucas’s 2012 exhibition NUDs at Museo Diego Rivera Anahuacalli, Mexico City, as its point of departure. Lucas’s first presentation in Mexico placed her stuffed Lycra bodies, cigarettes, toilets, adobe bricks and anthropomorphic sculptures within Diego Rivera and Juan O’Gorman’s extraordinary museum for Rivera’s collection of pre-Hispanic objects.

Quinn Latimer did not see it.

Writing from Elba several months later, and before she had visited Mexico City, Latimer reconstructs the exhibition through four essays moving between Lucas’s sculpture and a much wider field of association: shame, passivity, fertility, palindromes, Antonin Artaud, Napoleon, Susan Sontag and Mary Wollstonecraft.

The resulting book occupies an unusual position between artist book, exhibition document, criticism and literature.

The photographs return Lucas’s bodies again as reproductions — stockings become sculpture, sculpture becomes photograph, photograph becomes page.

A particularly compact publication in which documentation does not close the distance between viewer and work.

It preserves it.

Condition: Very good. Light shelf and handling wear to the orange front panel, including minor rubbing and slight edge/corner wear; black cloth spine and rear board remain clean and strong. Internally clean and well preserved.
