Published for Rist’s exhibitions at Hayward Gallery, London, 28 September 2011–8 January 2012, and Kunsthalle Mannheim, 24 March–24 June 2012. The Hayward presentation was her first major survey in the UK, bringing together more than thirty videos, sculptures, photographs and immersive installations made from the late 1980s onward.
Rist established her international reputation through intensely coloured moving-image works in which bodies, plants, domestic objects and landscapes pass between the intimate scale of the monitor and the expanded architecture of installation. Pleasure, sexuality, technology and the natural world are treated not as separate subjects but as parts of the same visual environment.
Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, the publication includes essays by Konrad Bitterli, Elisabeth Bronfen, Chrissie Iles, Stefanie Müller and Stephanie Rosenthal, together with a visual essay created by Rist.
The book translates an exhibition built from projected light, movement and bodily immersion into a fixed sequence of pages. Its glossy, colour-shifting cover changes under light, extending Rist’s optical language onto the exterior of the publication. The catalogue operates less as a neutral record than as another surface through which the work continues to circulate.
