The improvised programme moves between rock, jazz, spoken performance and deliberate amateurism, concluding with a version of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. Pettibon occupies several positions within the release: musician, writer, illustrator and designer. His handwritten typography, vortex drawing and borrowed literary fragment turn the sleeve and accompanying booklet into an extension of the recording rather than secondary packaging.

Produced as Pettibon’s flyers, record covers, photocopied books and drawings were moving from the Southern California punk network into contemporary-art circulation, Torches and Standards retains both systems. Mike Kelley’s participation further locates it within the Los Angeles circle in which music, performance, writing and inexpensive printed matter operated alongside gallery work.

Complete copies matter. The picture disc, illustrated sleeve and artist’s booklet were conceived as one distributed object, placing drawing, sound and publishing within the same circulation.
