Printed Matter, Inc., 195 Tenth Avenue, New York, NY 10011. Original double-sided membership invitation using Raymond Pettibon’s drawing I Taught My Horse to Count, issued in support of Printed Matter’s 2014 membership campaign. Monochrome offset printing on coated paper, 12.5 × 17 cm. Pettibon image and membership appeal to recto; membership structure and illustrated benefits to verso. The leaflet anticipated Printed Matter’s move from Tenth Avenue to a new Eleventh Avenue space in 2015.
Condition: Very good. Light handling, faint surface marks and minor edge wear.
Founded by artists and art workers in 1976, Printed Matter developed an international distribution system for artists’ books and related publications. Pettibon’s own practice emerged through self-published drawings, punk flyers and inexpensive zines, making his involvement especially close to the organisation’s original purpose.
The reverse makes that system visible. Six membership levels — from Friend at $60 to Benefactor at $2,000 — are matched with publications and editions by Peter Sutherland, Sam Falls, Linder Sterling, Jeremy Deller and Iñaki Bonillas, with a Jason Polan tote offered across all levels. The artist’s drawing attracts the member; the member funds the distribution of further artists’ work.
A fundraising document in which support, publishing and collecting are placed inside the same printed circuit.
Securely packed; tracked UK and international shipping available.
