Collection: James Birch
James Birch is a British curator, art dealer and gallerist whose work has connected contemporary British art with international exhibition contexts. He opened James Birch Art in 1983, showing Surrealists and emerging British artists, followed by Birch & Conran Fine Art in Soho in 1987 and later A22 Gallery in Clerkenwell; he was also Grayson Perry’s first gallerist. Birch organised Francis Bacon’s exhibition at Moscow’s Central House of Artists in 1988 and subsequently enabled Gilbert & George’s presentations in Russia and China, recounting the Bacon exhibition in his memoir Bacon in Moscow.
