BREYER P-ORRIDGE, Transgendered Sacred Heart, Candle Sticker, A22 Gallery, 2003

Made for Painful But Fabulous (The Lives and Art of Genesis P-Orridge), the Breyer P-Orridge exhibition at James Birch's A22 Gallery in Clerkenwell, London, in June 2003, stickers like this one were applied by hand to tall glass devotional candles, which were then signed by both artists. This sticker was never applied. It carries the Transgendered Sacred Heart, the image that also appears on the exhibition's private view invitation: a Catholic Sacred Heart picture with halo and clouds, altered so that the figure has breasts and holds a suspended red heart. The reverse is blank. From the James Birch Collection. 16.2 × 10.1 cm. Unused. Fine, with faint signs of age and a few light bumps to the corners. It is the only unused example we know of; the others went onto the glass.
