Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, 901 East 3rd Street, Los Angeles, 27 October 2018–20 January 2019. Original large-format exhibition invitation. Colour and monochrome offset printing on card stock, 26 × 20 cm. A twelve-image detail from Analogue, 1998–2009, to recto; exhibition dates, Los Angeles address and full work caption to verso. The gallery’s first Los Angeles exhibition devoted to Leonard coincided with her retrospective at MOCA.
Condition: Very good. Light handling and surface marks, minor edge wear and a small mark near the lower-right margin.
Developed over a decade, Analogue comprises 412 photographs arranged into twenty-five chapters. Leonard began by recording disappearing shops and displays around Manhattan’s Lower East Side, then followed the circulation of second-hand clothing and other commodities through markets in Africa, Eastern Europe, Cuba, Mexico and the Middle East.
The project was made with a vintage Rolleiflex and analogue printing processes at the moment both the photographed businesses and the photographic technology itself were being displaced.
The invitation reproduces twelve images as a single grid: mattresses, chairs, appliances and wrapped merchandise positioned between use, disposal and resale. A decade-long study of circulation is reduced to an object designed to circulate.
Securely packed; tracked UK and international shipping available.
