Issued for Guyton’s exhibition at Matthew Marks, opening Thursday 14 September, through 28 October 2023. The exhibition presented recent paintings made from studio photographs, wet ink, New York Times screenshots, bitmap files, a Manet still life, and views from the artist’s studio window. The metal hanging racks Guyton had repurposed in his studio were restaged as a display system for the paintings themselves.

The poster’s design follows the logic of the work: black ground, a single inset colour photograph — close-up of a studio rack leg with a coiled striped cable looping across a dark floor — and the gallery’s name and year in red serif type along the lower margin. Image, studio debris, and institutional credit on a single surface.

The reverse carries the gallery’s administrative information — artist name, opening date and hours, run dates, gallery address — printed on one folded section. The object operates partly as poster, partly as gallery sheet: image on one side, circulation data on the other. The fold is not incidental. It records the poster’s first use: not framed display, but distribution.

Guyton’s practice has long placed painting inside systems of digital production: computers, scanners, inkjet printers, image files, screenshots, studio debris, and the misregistration of mechanical output. By 2023, the studio itself had become both subject and structure. The poster follows that logic at a smaller scale — a printed image that folds, travels, carries gallery data on its back, and returns as an object after the exhibition has closed.

Condition: Good. Original fold lines retained, with light handling consistent with distribution and storage. Ships flat where possible, or carefully packed with archival support.
