Condition: good vintage condition; general rubbing, surface marks and light scratching to the printed dust jacket, with wear and minor bumping at the edges and corners. Some handling marks to the pale rear panel. Internally clean, with the binding sound.

Published to accompany a large group exhibition at Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf im Ehrenhof, Kunstpalast, 12 April–13 July 1997, devoted to the twenty-three years Klaus Rinke taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Rather than functioning as a conventional Rinke monograph, Saldo records the artists, working conditions and exchanges that developed around his class between 1974 and 1997.

The book combines portraits, student works, performances, installations, studio activity and informal documentation. Former students represented include Reinhard Mucha, Volker Tannert and Gert Kampendonk, alongside a much wider network of artists whose practices resist any single identifiable “class style.”

Its title — Saldo, or balance — positions the publication as an account of an educational structure rather than a celebration of one author. Rinke appears as teacher, organiser and participant, but the visual record is repeatedly redistributed among the members of the class. Individual works become part of a larger history of teaching, proximity and institutional formation.

The design reinforces this collective structure. A portrait is partially obscured by the repeated word SALDO, while the pale reverse carries the typewritten statement heute ist heute — “today is today.” Across more than four hundred pages, the catalogue operates as a dense photographic archive of an art class understood as a temporary social and productive system.
