Clothbound hardcover, first edition, Steidl, Göttingen, 2023. 80 pages; 62 colour images; English text; 21.5 × 26.5 cm (measured in shrinkwrap). ISBN 978-3-96999-185-5.

Condition: unopened in its original shrinkwrapped packaging. Light rubbing and pressure creasing to the plastic, particularly around the corners and lower edge, with the original retail barcode label retained on the rear. The book appears well preserved beneath but has not been opened for inspection. From a collection of artist publications retained in their original shrinkwrap.

Mother, Wonder is the eleventh volume in Roni Horn’s ongoing To Place series, initiated in 1989 and conceived as a body of work existing entirely through books. The volume focuses on Landbrot in southern Iceland, whose unusual geology Horn approaches as a landscape suspended somewhere between physical fact and imagined territory. Across the series, Iceland becomes a changing index of place, identity and repeated experience.

Horn has travelled regularly through Iceland since 1975, making its landscape, weather, water and isolation central to her practice. Her books are not secondary records of sculptures or exhibitions but primary works in which photographs, sequences and physical design produce their own encounters with place.

This copy remains at the threshold of use. Still sealed, it has never been converted into a reading or reference copy. The shrinkwrap preserves the publication in the form in which it entered circulation: visible, available and unopened. Within the original shrinkwrapped collection, its condition records deliberate retention rather than rarity alone.
