Published for Prince’s seventh solo exhibition at Sadie Coles HQ, 29 March–5 May 2023. The catalogue reproduces paintings made between 2019 and 2021 that extend the Joke Paintings he began in the early 1980s. It also includes a contribution from Jim Carrey and an exchange between Dave Hickey and Sheila Heti.

For this series, Prince drew on an archive of jokes and handwritten stage notes by American comedian Rodney Dangerfield. Familiar one-liners are enlarged and repeatedly painted over facsimiles of Dangerfield’s dense late-career notes, alongside fragments drawn from Prince’s earlier Hippie Drawings, Protest Paintings, Cheque Paintings and High Times.

The joke becomes an unstable piece of shared language. Removed from performance, repeated across different paintings and layered over another person’s handwriting, it becomes difficult to assign to a single speaker. What begins as comedy moves between archive, readymade text, painting and publication.

The catalogue returns these layered paintings to printed circulation. The cover’s oversized joke is reproduced over notes, corrections and provisional marks, while the barcode on the reverse places the resulting object back within an ordinary system of stock and sale.
