Original 2006 artist postcard reproducing Martin Kippenberger’s Ohne Titel (1981) from the landmark Lieber Maler, male mir series. Published by Edition5 under licence from the Estate of Martin Kippenberger and Galerie Gisela Capitain, Cologne.

Rather than painting the canvases himself, Kippenberger commissioned a commercial sign painter, Werner, to execute them from his photographs, deliberately unsettling conventional ideas of authorship, originality, artistic labour, and authenticity. The series has since become one of the central reference points in discussions of appropriation and conceptual painting. The reproduced painting is among Kippenberger’s most memorable images: an almost absurdly sentimental white dog rendered with commercial precision, simultaneously embracing and undermining conventional painting by borrowing the visual language of advertising and amateur portraiture.

Issued in 2006, the year of the major retrospective Martin Kippenberger: The Problem Perspective at Tate Modern and K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, this postcard belongs to the secondary publishing culture that surrounded the artist’s posthumous reception. Rather than serving as exhibition ephemera, it functions as a licensed image edition intended for collectors, museums, and specialist bookshops.

Although Edition5 postcards were commercially available, they were produced for a niche audience and were seldom preserved with the same care as exhibition catalogues or posters. Individual cards surface only occasionally on the secondary market, and Kippenberger material — particularly objects reproducing key works from the early 1980s — continues to attract strong institutional and private interest as his reputation grows internationally.
