LINUS BILL and ADRIEN HORNI began working together through a process of drawing, cutting, pasting, scanning and exchanging images. Small compositions were gathered into publications before selected pages were translated into large paintings using acrylic and silkscreen. The page remained part of the finished work: canvases from the sequence retain titles such as Gemälde, p. 53, identifying the printed model from which they emerged.
Produced for their 2014 exhibition at M J in Geneva, this early Gemälde catalogue contains 36 Xeroxed pages of layered photographs, digital marks, cartoon fragments and abstract forms. Its thin, slightly translucent stock allows images and typography to remain faintly visible through adjoining pages. The publication does not simply reproduce the paintings; it records the stage at which their images existed before enlargement, colour and transfer to canvas.
The project expanded the following year into Gemälde 2013–2017, a 367-page volume assembling more than 350 proposed paintings in advance of their production. This smaller M J publication sits near the beginning of that sequence, when the catalogue, working image and exhibition object had not yet separated into fixed roles.
