Collection: Adrien Horni

Adrien Horni (born 1981, Geneva) is a Swiss artist whose practice moves across painting, publication, and the printed image. Working from a base in Geneva, Horni has developed a body of work in which the processes of reproduction — scanning, photocopying, layering, transfer — are not merely technical operations but the generative conditions of the work itself.

Horni is best known for his long-running collaboration with LINUS BILL, through which the two artists developed the Gemälde project: a sustained exchange of drawn, cut, and scanned images that were first assembled into Xeroxed publications before being scaled into large acrylic and silkscreen paintings. The printed page was never subordinate to the canvas — finished works carry titles such as Gemälde, p. 53, preserving the publication as the named origin of each painting.

Publications by Adrien Horni — produced alone and in collaboration — occupy a precise position within his practice: small-edition catalogues, artist books, and exhibition documents in which the image exists at an earlier, less resolved stage. Thin stock, Xerox reproduction, and the faint legibility of one page through another are not incidental qualities but structural ones. These objects record a process rather than a result, and in doing so they remain open in ways that the finished painting is not.
