Edited by Alison Fell. Paperback original, Masks series, published by Serpent’s Tail, London, 1990. Illustrations by Grizelda Holderness; Feminist Book Fortnight selected title. Illustrated softcover; 208 pages; 13 × 20 cm. ISBN 1-85242-169-X.

Contributors: Kathy Acker (Humility), Leslie Dick (Generosity), Zoë Fairbairns (Fortitude), Alison Fell (Chastity), Sara Maitland (Justice), Agnes Owens (Patience), Michèle Roberts (Charity).

Condition: good, visibly handled; rubbing, scratches and creasing to the wrappers, with edge wear, softened corners and small areas of surface abrasion. Interior condition not confirmed.

A companion to the earlier Seven Deadly Sins, this paperback assigned seven conventional virtues to seven feminist writers, each approaching her subject through fiction and satire. Published by Serpent’s Tail and selected for Feminist Book Fortnight, it places Acker’s experimental writing beside an important group of British feminist novelists working across realism, politics and formally disruptive fiction.

The allocation is part of the structure: Acker receives humility, Fell chastity and Roberts charity. Moral categories become editorial prompts, while seven distinct writers are formatted into one collective proposition. The author appears here not through an individual book but through placement within a temporary group.
