The novel moves between three unstable narratives: the relationship between Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine; Airplane, a dancer caught within sexual and economic exploitation; and Capitol, whose family history becomes entangled with the artist Harry. Acker draws upon biography, literary history and American culture to present identity not as something fixed, but as something repeatedly produced through language, desire and power.

The dust jacket extends as a continuous image across the book. A burning boat, skeletons, weapons, floating papers and an isolated city convert the novel into a landscape of departure and collapse. The text remains contained by the hardcover while its identities appear to disperse across the wrapper.
