First published in serial form in San Francisco during the mid-1970s, I Dreamt I Was a Nymphomaniac: Imagining belongs to the period before Kathy Acker became an institutional figure. Produced within a network of small presses, underground distribution, performance culture, and experimental writing, the book sits close to the point where appropriation, autobiography, fiction, and persona begin to collapse into one another. The text would later be absorbed into the larger body of work that established Acker as one of the defining literary figures of late twentieth-century counterculture.

The object retains traces of that earlier economy. Not a first-edition rarity in the bibliographic sense, but a surviving support from a moment when books moved through alternative channels rather than conventional literary infrastructure. The cover functions less as illustration than declaration: desire, identity, fantasy, and narration compressed into a portable form.

Today the book occupies an unusual position. It survives simultaneously as literature, artist-adjacent printed matter, feminist document, punk-era artefact, and evidence of a publishing culture that operated largely outside the mainstream. Its continued circulation has become part of its meaning.

Acker's writing remains. The systems that first carried it have largely disappeared.

Condition: Good vintage condition. Surface rubbing, light creasing, edge wear, age toning, and handling marks consistent with circulation and storage.
