Published in Madrid in 1994, American Caesar: Letras translates Iggy Pop's 1993 album American Caesar from record into book: lyrics, Spanish translations and black-and-white photographs gathered in a compact square paperback.
Removed from the music, the songs read differently. Sex, violence, drugs, boredom and the uglier edges of American life remain, but on the page they become blunt, fragmentary texts — somewhere between lyric, confession and provocation.
The design is equally direct. Iggy appears pale and confrontational on the cover beneath oversized hand-painted lettering, interrupted by a pink LETRAS panel. The back is an almost lurid purple, with a short Spanish text positioning the album within the long afterlife of the Stooges and Pop's solo career.
Neither conventional music book nor simple lyric sheet, it belongs to a more particular category of 1990s publishing: the inexpensive album-related paperback that becomes, with time, a piece of printed ephemera in its own right.
A small, strange and very good-looking object from the American Caesar period.
Translations by Ivan Giesen and Alberto Manzano. Softcover, approx. 73–78 pages. Spanish / English. ISBN 84-87553-89-3.
Condition: Good vintage condition, with rubbing, handling marks and light edge wear to the covers consistent with age. Please refer to photographs.
