Issued for Wade Guyton’s 2023 exhibition at Galerie Chantal Crousel. The card reproduces a photographic image of a dead deer washed onto a pebble shoreline — a stark and unusually melancholic image within Guyton’s broader vocabulary of inkjet abstractions, scanner distortions, and industrial image production.
By 2023, Guyton’s position within contemporary art had long been established through his use of Epson printers, stretched linen, unstable digital files, and accidental image errors that blurred distinctions between painting, photography, and mechanical reproduction. This invitation sits within that lineage while feeling quieter and more atmospheric than his earlier “X” paintings and monochrome printer works. The image operates less as documentation than as a suspended fragment: ecological image, found photograph, circulation object.
The invitation belongs to a specific ecosystem of high-end gallery ephemera associated with post-2000 contemporary art — carefully designed announcement cards produced in relatively small quantities for mailing lists, fairs, collectors, curators, and institutional distribution. The restrained typography of Chantal Crousel paired with the unsettling shoreline photograph gives the card an unusually cold and cinematic presence.
Wade Guyton ephemera appears far less frequently on the secondary market than monographs or posters.
