Condition: good overall; light handling wear to the cloth-covered boards, with a short area of splitting and lifting to the cloth along the upper outer joint, accompanied by minor rubbing and discolouration. Internally clean. The affected area is clearly shown in the photographs.

Published for Pane’s major solo exhibition at John Hansard Gallery in 2001, subsequently presented at Arnolfini from 23 February to 14 April 2002. Described as the first exhibition in England to consider the full breadth of her practice, it brought the celebrated bodily Actions into relation with her painting, sculpture, drawing and photography. A selection of works was later displayed at Tate Modern.

Pane established her international reputation during the 1970s through carefully choreographed performances in which the body became both material and a means of communication. Rather than isolating the physical intensity of these works, the publication places them within a broader practice concerned with love, pain, mortality, spirituality and collective experience.

The restrained production is particularly effective: pale grey-mauve cloth, a small silver lowercase title and wide photographic sequences extending across the landscape-format pages. The live action enters circulation as photograph, caption and printed sequence. What remains is not the performance itself, but the structure through which it continues to be seen.
