Issued for the opening of the major Centre Georges Pompidou exhibition dedicated to Salvador Dalí on 18 December 1979, during the institution’s formative early years under director Pontus Hultén. The invitation announces one of the most significant museum presentations of Dalí’s work in postwar Europe, staged at a moment when the Pompidou was establishing itself as the new centre of modern and contemporary culture in Paris.

The design is unusually restrained for Dalí. Rather than relying on overt Surrealist imagery, the card uses the silhouette of a classical sculpture placed against the tiled floor of the Pompidou interior, collapsing museum space, body, and institutional theatre into a single graphic field. The object feels transitional: somewhere between official administrative print matter and late-1970s conceptual exhibition graphics.

Historically, the card belongs to a period when Dalí’s reputation was shifting from scandalous Surrealist provocateur toward fully institutionalised cultural figure. Pompidou-era material from this moment has become increasingly collectible because it documents the absorption of avant-garde figures into large-scale museum culture. Unlike posters or later reproductions, opening invitations were produced in comparatively small quantities, handled briefly, and often discarded after the event.

What survives now functions less as supplementary exhibition material and more as evidence of circulation: a printed support tied to a specific evening, institution, and cultural atmosphere in Paris at the end of the 1970s.

Condition: Good vintage condition. Light surface wear, faint handling marks, and soft age toning to verso consistent with period paper ephemera.

Scarcity: Uncommon. Original Pompidou invitations from this period surface infrequently, particularly in clean condition with strong graphic presence.
