PAUL BUCK — Ulli’s Room (A Radio Piece), Loot 2:2, Spectacular Diseases, Peterborough, 1981

Scarce first edition of Paul Buck’s experimental radio piece, issued as part of the independent Loot supplement series to Spectacular Diseases, edited and published by Paul Green, Peterborough, 1981. Ulli Freer’s cover combines drawing, notation, architectural fragments and degraded reproduction into a dense visual field extending the publication beyond conventional literary illustration.

Buck occupied an unusual position between British experimental publishing and the French literary avant-garde. Through Curtains, he helped circulate writers including Georges Bataille and Maurice Blanchot among English-language readers. During the same period he was connected with Kathy Acker, whose correspondence and exchange with Buck developed around appropriation, plagiarism and the movement of writing between different cultural systems.

Freer was himself a poet, performer, visual artist and small-press publisher. Ulli’s Room therefore joins two related practices across text, sound, performance and visual poetry. Conceived as a radio work, the piece survives here as a printed score: a proposed broadcast converted into a stapled object and distributed through the experimental press.

Approximately 21 × 29.7 cm. 20 pages, side-stapled in illustrated wrappers. Black-and-white printing throughout. Condition: good vintage condition. General toning and handling wear, rubbing and scattered marks to the wrappers, softened edges and corners, a small stain along the lower edge and light oxidation to the staples. Binding remains intact.
