Wolfgang Tillmans

Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968, Remscheid) is a German artist whose photographs, installations and publications span portraiture, still life, abstraction, documentary, and the found image. Working without hierarchy between subject matter or medium, his practice treats the photograph as an object in the world as much as a representation of it. He has been closely associated with the queer community in London and beyond, and his work engages persistently with political life, youth culture, music, and the circulation of images across media.

Tillmans was awarded the Turner Prize in 2000 and has been the subject of major retrospectives at Tate Modern, Kunsthalle Zürich, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. He participated in Documenta X in 1997.
