Roland Barthes (1915–1980) was a French literary theorist, critic, and semiotician whose essays on myth, photography, narrative, and the death of the author transformed the study of culture and representation across literature, visual art, and film. His works Mythologies (1957), S/Z (1970), and Camera Lucida (1980) became essential references for artists, critics, and curators engaging with image, text, and ideology. A professor at the Collège de France from 1977, he was a central figure in French structuralism and post-structuralism and his influence on art criticism and visual culture remains pervasive.
