The exhibition began in Lyon in 1979 as Boubat par Boubat: un choix de photographies 1947–1979, with Boubat selecting thirty-two years of his own images and Marguerite Duras writing the preface. In February 1980 the project moved from the Fondation nationale de la Photographie into ARC, the experimental contemporary-art programme of the Musée d’Art moderne. The itinerary matters: photographer → archive → self-selection → museum author.

Duras’s presence was anything but decorative. While making India Song, she had used Boubat photographs to stand in for a character physically absent from the film — a still image made to perform as a body: present, remembered and unreachable at once. She understood something unusually sharp in his work: that beneath its celebrated tenderness was an ability to catch people at precisely the point where identity begins to slip away.

The invitation image almost seems designed around that idea. Its figure turns away from us, partially swallowed by hair, flowers and a decorative screen. We see a body but are denied the face. Presence becomes withholding. Portrait becomes disappearance.

ARC was during these years actively testing photography’s relationship to contemporary art, presenting Florence Henri, Robert Doisneau and Boubat alongside broader debates about photographers working increasingly close to the territory of artists. This card belongs not simply to a Boubat retrospective, but to the period in which French photography was being renegotiated as museum material. The same year Roland Barthes published La Chambre claire. No direct connection needs to be invented. The atmosphere is enough.
