Collection: Lawrence Weiner

Lawrence Weiner (1942–2021) was an American artist whose practice centred on language as both medium and material. From the late 1960s, Weiner produced works consisting entirely of written statements — propositions describing actions, materials, and relationships that could be realised or simply known. His 1968 Declaration of Intent established that an artwork need not be built by the artist, need not be built at all, and that knowledge of the work is sufficient.

Weiner's work appeared in books, posters, catalogues, films, and public installations, making printed matter a primary vehicle for his practice rather than a supplement to it. He was a central figure in conceptual art and maintained a prolific publishing output throughout his career, working with galleries, institutions, and independent publishers across Europe and North America.

Publications gathered here include artist books, exhibition catalogues, and printed matter by and about Lawrence Weiner. Original and period items.
