Collection: Jean Marcenac

Jean Marcenac (1913–2004) was a French poet, critic and Communist intellectual whose writing engaged closely with the visual arts throughout his career. A member of the French Resistance and a recipient of the Prix Paul Verlaine, he contributed prefaces and critical texts to publications connected with Picasso, Fernand Léger and other artists of the postwar French left. His introductory text for Éditions Cercle d'Art's Le Goût du Bonheur (1970), reproducing facsimiles of three Picasso working notebooks from 1964, is among the more sustained examples of his critical writing on Picasso's late practice.
