Claes Oldenburg (1929–2022) was a Swedish-born American sculptor whose large-scale soft sculptures and proposed colossal monuments made him a defining figure of Pop Art. Working from the early 1960s, he transformed everyday consumer objects—typewriters, toilets, clothespins—into monumental or deliberately flaccid forms, interrogating the boundaries between high art and mass culture. He represented the United States at the 1964 Venice Biennale and his public sculptures are held in permanent collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Tate Modern, London.
