Collection: Charles Ray

Charles Ray (born 1953, Chicago) is an American sculptor whose practice is grounded in a sustained investigation of scale, the body, realism, and the conditions of perception. Working across fibreglass, steel, aluminium, and found objects, Ray produces works that appear familiar but are systematically displaced — enlarged, reduced, recast, or subtly altered in ways that unsettle the viewer’s relationship to the object and to their own body.

Ray came to prominence in the late 1980s and 1990s with works including Fall ’91, Oh! Charley, Charley, Charley…, and Unpainted Sculpture, establishing him as one of the most rigorous and formally inventive sculptors of his generation. His practice has been the subject of major retrospectives and solo exhibitions at institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and Matthew Marks Gallery, New York.
