Collection: Berenice Abbott

Berenice Abbott (1898–1991) was an American photographer whose documentary and scientific work established photography as a rigorous medium of inquiry across portraiture, urban documentation, and physics visualization. Working in Paris in the 1920s, she assisted Man Ray and produced the definitive portrait series of Eugène Atget, whose archive she preserved and brought to international attention. Her monumental project Changing New York (1935–1939), produced under the Federal Art Project, remains a primary document of Depression-era urban transformation. Abbott participated in major survey exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and her work entered international museum collections across the United States and Europe.
