The front reproduces Duchamp, 1999, graphite on paper, 7⅞ × 7⅞ inches: a near-empty cream field with a single diagonal passage of dense graphite hatching entering from the lower right corner. The reverse functions as announcement: exhibition dates, reception, gallery address.

Produced at the beginning of a period in which Mills’ graphite drawings were gaining wider visibility, the invitation belongs to the infrastructure surrounding the exhibition rather than the exhibition itself. It records a temporary arrangement between artist, gallery, mailing list, and visitor. Its intended life was brief.

The object survives after the event it announced. Detached from the gallery counter and postal system, it becomes a record of placement. The drawing circulates as reproduction; the exhibition circulates as typography; the artist circulates as a name accompanied by an address.

Joseph Helman Gallery occupied a particular position within New York’s contemporary art landscape during the 1990s and early 2000s, exhibiting artists whose practices were grounded in measured material decisions rather than spectacle. The invitation reflects that economy. Nothing exceeds its function.

Examples appear only occasionally on the secondary market. Printed in small numbers for distribution rather than retention, most disappeared once the exhibition concluded.
