FINE RATS INTERNATIONAL — Under Spaghetti Junction [Roman Signer et al.]. Birmingham, 1993

Condition: Good. General toning, minor handling and light edge wear to the invitation. The plastic pouch is rubbed, creased and marked, with small applied labels and adhesive remnants. Dust, loose debris and a dead fly remain trapped inside its lower section. Their point of entry is unknown; the pouch has been retained as found.

Fine Rats International developed exhibitions outside conventional gallery spaces across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Under Spaghetti Junction occupied the infrastructure beneath the M6 motorway interchange for two nights in September 1993, presenting temporary installations and actions within a site defined by roads, tunnels, canals and industrial movement. The project was returned to public view in 2015 when its unfinished documentary was included in Birmingham Show at Eastside Projects.

The invitation reduces the event to the information required for entry: two dates, three nocturnal hours, free admission, an approach through Electric Avenue and an A–Z reference. An aerial view identifies the system above. The artist list occupies the other side.

A copy of Under Spaghetti Junction was retained in the Colin de Land and Pat Hearn Library, formed from the personal and working libraries of Pat Hearn Gallery and American Fine Arts. Now held by the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, the collection records printed material distributed through gallery, artist-led, underground and unconventional channels. The invitation appears in its published-material inventory alongside the wider circulation of the two New York galleries.

This copy has continued to gather material after the exhibition ended. Card, pouch, labels, dust and insect remain held together as one surviving unit.
