Space Travel, Elizabeth Wright. Locus+ / Nexus, Newcastle upon Tyne, 2005. Softcover artist publication with CD, 25 × 18 cm, 32 pages. Edition of 1,500. Essay: ‘Park and Ride’ by Dave Beech.
Published to accompany Wright’s 2005 public artwork for the Gateshead Metro tunnel, commissioned by Nexus and curated by Locus+. The tunnel work consisted of 115 images of car parks, installed as light-reflective panels and seen from the Metro train as a moving sequence between Gateshead and Newcastle Central Station — described at the time as the first public artwork commissioned for a railway tunnel.
The publication uses a stark black-and-white graphic language: a barcode-like band wraps across front and back covers; interior spreads use wide white margins and horizontal image strips, echoing film, signage, transport graphics, and the fleeting view from a train window. The original CD is present inside, visually integrated with the circular Space Travel graphic label.
Wright’s practice often defamiliarises ordinary objects and existing architectural structures, shifting them into sculptural or perceptual events. Here, the car park, tunnel, platform, sign, and train window all become part of the work’s viewing apparatus.
A publication for a work that could only be properly seen in transit. The original artwork belonged to movement, speed, and partial visibility: a sequence passing the passenger for seconds at a time. The book reverses that condition. It fixes the tunnel into pages, converts a public artwork into a distributable support, and turns a Metro journey into an object that can be held, stored, sold, and reclassified. Not simply documentation. A printed afterlife for a work located between places.
Condition: Good used condition. Light surface soiling, rubbing, handling marks, soft corners, and age-related wear. CD visually present but untested. Ships carefully packed; international shipping available.
