A compact exhibition guide produced for David Shrigley’s How Are You Feeling? at Cornerhouse, Manchester. The exhibition brought together drawing, sculpture, animation, performance and participatory works. The guide condenses that programme into a simple folded format, combining gallery information, work descriptions, event listings, visitor instructions and Shrigley’s own drawings and handwriting.

Its design closely reflects the character of the exhibition. Rather than separating institutional information from the artist’s visual language, both are allowed to occupy the same surface. One outer panel reads: “Wake up from your nightmare and come to my exhibition.”

Inside, the publication maps the galleries and describes works including The Artist (2012), Gong (2012), Playfight (2012) and the participatory Life Model project. It functions as both practical guide and concise record of an exhibition built around audience involvement and Shrigley’s characteristic mixture of humour, instruction and unease.

For The New Rare, the interest lies in the way an otherwise temporary piece of gallery information carries something of the exhibition’s structure with it. The drawings, instructions and navigation remain attached to the document after the show itself has disappeared. A modest piece of institutional ephemera with a particularly direct relationship to the artist’s work.

Condition: Very good. Light handling and minor edge wear, with original folds as issued. Clean and complete.
