Slide Shows began in 2012 as a series of online self-portraits commissioned during Fillip’s Institutions by Artists conference. Publishers, artists, designers, booksellers and librarians were asked to describe their work through sequences of captioned images. The contributors include 4478zine, And publishing, David Horvitz, mono.kultur, Occasional Papers, Oslo Editions, Michalis Pichler, David Senior, split/fountain, Eva Weinmayr and Wendy Yao.
The publication transfers those sequences from Tumblr into print without resolving them into essays or institutional profiles. Images repeat, captions advance and each participant remains responsible for the terms of their own appearance. The field is recorded through its own desks, shelves, filing systems, publications, portraits and production spaces.
Issued as an index to an online project and as a preview of a larger publication, the booklet occupies several positions at once: conference document, directory, archive and distribution copy. A network assembled through independent publishing is made portable, then returned to circulation as another publication within that network.
