Collection: Charlotte Cheetham

Charlotte Cheetham is a Canadian curator, writer and researcher whose practice centres on independent publishing, artists’ books and the institutional structures through which printed matter circulates. Based in Vancouver, she has worked closely with Fillip — the Vancouver-based journal and publisher — where her projects have examined the conditions under which artists, designers, booksellers and librarians produce and distribute their work.

Slide Shows: A Landscape of Contemporary Independent & Art Publishing (Fillip Editions, 2013) is among the most direct documents of her curatorial approach. Commissioned for Fillip’s Institutions by Artists conference in 2012, the project invited contributors to produce video self-portraits — sequences of captioned images describing their practice — which were hosted on Tumblr before being transferred into print. The resulting publication functions simultaneously as conference document, directory, archive and distribution object: a network made portable and returned to circulation as another item within it.
