Wolf Vostell

Wolf Vostell (1932–1998) was a German artist and a founding figure of Fluxus and the European happening movement. From the late 1950s Vostell developed the concept of décoll/age — a process of layering, tearing and overprinting derived from the defaced commercial posters he encountered in Paris — and applied it to painting, performance, installation and video. His early television-based works, beginning with TV Dé-coll/age (1963), are among the first uses of television as an artistic medium and place him alongside Nam June Paik as a pioneer of video art. Vostell organised and participated in major Fluxus festivals and happenings across Europe and the United States during the 1960s and exhibited at Documenta 4 (1968) and Documenta 6 (1977).
