Collection: Terry Atkinson

Terry Atkinson (born 1939) was a founding member of Art & Language, the British conceptual art group established in 1968 whose practice centred on the use of language, theory and critical discourse as artistic material. His early work with Art & Language produced some of the most rigorous and demanding texts in British conceptual art, questioning the institutional and philosophical conditions under which art is defined and evaluated. Atkinson later developed an independent practice that engaged more directly with political history, war imagery and the representation of conflict, producing paintings and works on paper that brought conceptual methods into contact with figurative and historical subject matter.
