Marlene Dumas (born 1953) is a South African-born, Amsterdam-based painter whose figurative work draws on found photography, art history and mass media to address sexuality, identity, race and mortality with psychological directness and painterly immediacy. She studied at the University of Cape Town and subsequently in Amsterdam, where she has lived and worked since the late 1970s. Dumas represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale in 1995 and has been the subject of major retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2008) and Tate Modern, London (2015).
