Louis Malle

Louis Malle (1932–1995) was a French filmmaker whose career spanned fiction, documentary and children's cinema across five decades and two continents. Beginning as Jacques Cousteau's co-director on The Silent World (1956), his features — including Lift to the Scaffold (1958), Les Amants (1958), Zazie dans le Métro (1960), Le Feu Follet (1963), Lacombe Lucien (1974) and Au Revoir les Enfants (1987) — placed him among the central figures of French cinema without fully belonging to the Nouvelle Vague. He was the subject of a BFI Distribution retrospective in early 1995.
