Jack Pierson (b. 1960, Plymouth, Massachusetts) is an American artist whose practice spans photography, drawing, installation and sculpture. Working from the late 1980s onwards, he developed a body of work that moves between desire, melancholy and the vernacular surfaces of American life. His word sculptures — assembled from salvaged letters in mismatched typefaces and colours — have become among the most recognised works in contemporary art, combining the visual language of commercial signage with states of longing, loss and aspiration.
