Hamish Fulton (born 1946) is a British artist whose practice is founded entirely on walking. Since the late 1960s he has made walks in landscapes across the world — from the Scottish Highlands to the Himalayas, the American desert to the Arctic — and translated those experiences into photographs, text works, wall paintings and printed matter. Fulton has consistently maintained that no walk, no work: the physical experience of walking is the artwork, and the objects he produces are records rather than substitutes for it. His work sits within the broader field of land art and conceptual practice but remains distinct in its insistence on the body, duration and the ethics of moving through landscape without leaving a mark.
