Collection: Armando

Armando (1929–2018), born Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd, was a Dutch painter, sculptor, poet and musician whose work was shaped entirely by his childhood proximity to the German occupation camp at Amersfoort. Developing what he called the concept of the "guilty landscape" — terrain that witnessed atrocity, retained its beauty and gradually concealed what had occurred — his paintings, sculptures and writings returned obsessively to this terrain across six decades. He participated in Documenta 6 in 1977 and was the subject of a major retrospective at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag; in 1998 the Armando Museum opened in his name in Amersfoort.
