Wegman emerged from the conceptual and video-art context of the early 1970s, using deadpan humour, simple actions, language, props, and the static camera to turn ordinary situations into concise absurd performances. His collaboration with his Weimaraner Man Ray became central to the photographs and videos, while later work with Fay Ray and the large-format Polaroid camera expanded the practice into staged colour photography, books, and broader popular circulation. By 1991–92, Wegman was already moving between conceptual art history, photography, painting, television, and mass recognition.
