Issued for Vivienne Westwood MAN Autumn/Winter 2000–01, four years into the standalone menswear line launched in Milan in 1996. The sheet opens by announcing its own retrospective intent: "Vivienne Westwood is looking back at her 30 years in fashion." What follows is the house periodising itself in three moves — rebellion, then irony shading into theatre and history, then a fourth position: "there is no more parody, values have changed." Four years before the V&A's 2004 retrospective fixed a version of this trajectory into museum form, the house had already written its own condensed history.

The sheet's sharper move is what it does with class. "There should be no classifications," it states, rejecting businessman, punk and clansman alike as uniforms. But the collection achieves this by recombining, not discarding, Britain's most class-coded materials: Savile Row tailoring, tartan, tweed and cashmere set against stonewashed denim and pieces drawn from Westwood's own archive. The proposition isn't that class disappears — it is that its familiar signs are taken apart and reassembled until the wearer stops being legible. The release ends on its clearest line: "There are no cowboys, city gents or school boys. He is anti cliché."

A press release sits upstream of a collection's finished history. It was written to tell editors and buyers how the collection should be read — before that reading passed into magazines, archives and eventually museums. The clothes and photographs survive elsewhere. This sheet preserves the instructions.

A companion to TNR's Vivienne Westwood MAN Autumn/Winter 2000–01 show announcement: the announcement carries the season's visual identity; this sheet carries its argument.
