An early printed document from Stefano Pilati's Random Identities, produced in collaboration with photographer Jordan Hemingway and released in 2019, shortly after Pilati established the independent Berlin-based label. Photography by Jordan Hemingway; makeup by Kenny Campbell; casting by Walter Pearce. Produced for Dover Street Market London. Softcover zine, 48 pages, 17.5 × 24.5 cm; photographic and reproduced graphic material.
Pilati founded Random Identities in 2017 after a career moving through Cerruti, Armani, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent and Zegna. At Saint Laurent he served as creative director for eight years. Random Identities marked a deliberate move away from the machinery of the established luxury house: a smaller, independently controlled project based in Berlin and organised around changing ideas of gender, identity and how clothes circulate.
The zine belongs directly to that shift. Rather than presenting a conventional seasonal lookbook, Pilati and Hemingway build a fragmented visual world from fashion photographs, contact-sheet sequences, drawings, handwritten pages and portraits. One spread describes the publication as being seen “through the eyes of a goth” and dedicated to Stefano. Elsewhere, figures move between club styling, personal documentation and fashion image-making.
Its contributor page reads less like the credits of a corporate campaign than the record of a temporary network: photographers, models, casting directors, studios, labs, artists and friends assembled around the project. This was part of Random Identities’ original proposition—Pilati taking the knowledge of institutional luxury and redistributing it through a younger, Berlin-centred and more informal system.
The restrained wrapper, almost anonymous apart from a black horizontal block on the front, makes the publication resist the usual mechanics of fashion branding. Inside, identity becomes unstable: repeated, photographed, handwritten, performed and reassigned. A fashion publication functioning simultaneously as campaign and independent document, recording the moment a designer associated with one of fashion’s largest houses deliberately moved into self-publishing, subculture and small-scale circulation.
Condition: Good. Light handling and surface wear to wrappers, with minor creasing, faint marks and slight edge and corner wear. Internally complete and generally clean.
Securely packed; tracked UK and international shipping available.
