The portrait borrows the polished codes of mid-1980s pop—jewellery, red lips, frontal studio photography—yet the severe makeup, black field and fixed gaze resist the easy accessibility expected of mainstream celebrity. Rather than becoming a conventional pop star, SIOUXSIE SIOUX remained marketable precisely because her difference could be reproduced without being resolved.
