Museum postcard, Richard Prince, Untitled (cowboy), 1997–98. Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, 2007. Offset-printed on stiff card, 15.2 × 10.8 cm. Colour image to recto; artwork credit, barcode, Guggenheim imprint, and “Printed in USA” to verso. Reproduces Untitled (cowboy), 1997–98, Ektacolor photograph, edition of 2, 60 × 40 inches; courtesy Gladstone Gallery, New York.
Issued in connection with Richard Prince: Spiritual America, the Guggenheim’s 2007–08 retrospective. The card reproduces one of Prince’s most recognised bodies of work: originally drawn from the visual language of Marlboro advertising, the Cowboy image moved from commercial print culture into photography, then into the museum, and here back into circulation as a small retail object.
This is distinct from the free promotional announcement cards distributed around New York for the exhibition. With barcode, Guggenheim imprint, and full artwork caption, this example belongs to the museum-shop circulation of the show rather than street-level promotion.
A small institutional object attached to one of Prince’s central images: advertising, appropriation, authorship, and museum distribution compressed into postcard form.
Condition: Very good. Light handling only, unposted. Ships flat with protective backing; UK and international shipping available.
