A slight, deliberately provisional publication assembled from text, photographs and the discarded visual language of magazines and publishing. Pages move between jokes, cultural references, photographic reproductions and images of studio material — including a battered package addressed to Richard Prince Studio through the TIME photo department, repeatedly stamped BLACK BRA.

The title has a further biographical resonance: Prince and writer Joan Katz were in a band called Black Bra around 1990, folding another minor strand of his life back into the circulation of the name.

Prince’s practice has long operated through material already in circulation: advertisements, magazines, cartoons, photographs, jokes and other people’s images. Black Bra reduces that method to the scale of a cheaply produced pamphlet. Rather than explaining the work, the publication behaves like it — material is selected, displaced, reproduced and returned to circulation under another name.

For The New Rare, this is precisely where a small publication becomes more than supporting literature. Magazine image, mailing package, joke, studio residue and artist book occupy the same register. The document does not sit outside the practice; it is one of the places the practice happens.
